Roto vs Points Leagues

The two dominant MLB fantasy formats score very differently. Understanding which you're playing changes how you value players entirely.

📊 Rotisserie (Roto)

Teams are ranked 1–N in each statistical category. Your rank in each category earns points. The team with the highest cumulative category points wins.

Standard 5×5 categories: Batting — R, HR, RBI, SB, AVG. Pitching — W, SV, K, ERA, WHIP.

Best for: Managers who want season-long strategic decisions and category management.

🔢 Points Leagues

Every stat earns a fixed number of points each week. Higher season-long or weekly totals beat your opponent. The calculator above uses points league scoring.

Best for: Managers familiar with NFL/NBA fantasy who prefer a direct points-scored format.

Note: In points leagues, counting stats (HR, K, SB) matter more than rate stats like AVG or ERA.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does MLB fantasy scoring work?

Points are awarded for batting stats (R, H, HR, RBI, SB) and pitching stats (IP, K, W, SV) with deductions for negative outcomes like earned runs or caught stealing. Use the calculator above to score any player line.

What is the difference between roto and points leagues?

Roto leagues rank teams in each stat category — finish first in HR and you earn maximum points for that category. Points leagues convert every individual stat directly into a fixed point value. Points leagues are simpler to follow week-to-week.

What are ESPN standard MLB fantasy settings?

ESPN batting defaults: R=+1, H=+1, HR=+4, RBI=+1, SB=+2, BB=+1, CS=–1. Pitching: IP=+1, K=+1, W=+5, SV=+5, HLD=+2, ER=–1, BB=–1.

What counts as a quality start in fantasy baseball?

A quality start is 6+ innings pitched with 3 or fewer earned runs allowed. Yahoo awards +3 pts for a QS; ESPN and Sleeper do not include it in default settings.

How are innings pitched scored in fantasy baseball?

Most platforms award +1 point per full inning pitched. A pitcher who goes 6.1 innings earns 6.33 points from IP (displayed as 6⅓). The partial inning fraction is calculated automatically in this calculator.
