How Defense / Special Teams (DST) Scoring Works

DST scoring in fantasy football is different from individual player scoring. Instead of tracking one player's stats, you're tracking the collective output of an entire defensive unit and special teams. Points come from two sources: positive events (turnovers, sacks, TDs) and a points-allowed tier that rewards your defense for keeping the opponent's offense quiet.

The points-allowed tier is the most important factor in DST scoring. A defense that holds its opponent to zero points earns 10 bonus points. The tiers step down from there — and a defense that allows 35 or more points will actually lose you points. This makes matchup selection critical: even a mediocre defense going against a turnover-prone offense can outscore an elite defense in a shootout.

DST Strategy: How to Win at Defense Picks

Stream Your Defense Weekly

Unlike other positions, DST performance is highly matchup-dependent. Instead of locking in one defense all season, experienced fantasy managers "stream" their DST — picking up whichever defense has the easiest matchup each week. A backup defense against a bad offense often scores more than an elite defense in a tough matchup.

Target Defenses Facing Turnover-Prone QBs

Interceptions and fumble recoveries are worth 2 points each and have an outsized impact on DST scoring. When a defense faces a QB who throws a high number of interceptions, the upside for turnovers is significant. Check the opposing QB's INT rate before making your DST decision.

Points Allowed is the Most Important Factor

The difference between allowing 13 points (+4 pts) and allowing 28 points (-1 pt) is 5 fantasy points — the same as 50 rushing yards. Prioritize defenses going up against offenses that struggle to score. Low-scoring opponents often produce 3–7+ DST point swings through the points-allowed tier alone.

Weather and Home/Away

Cold weather, high winds, or snow can suppress passing offenses significantly — reducing both the opponent's point output and the likelihood of big passing plays. Defenses in bad weather conditions often outperform their season average.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a fumble recovery count the same as an interception for fantasy?

Yes — in standard ESPN/Yahoo/Sleeper scoring, both interceptions and fumble recoveries are worth 2 fantasy points each for a DST. However, the fumble must be recovered by the defense to count. A fumble that goes out of bounds or is recovered by a teammate doesn't score the defense any points.

Do pick-six touchdowns count for both the interception and the TD?

Yes. A pick-six earns both the interception points (+2) and the defensive TD points (+6) for a total of +8 points. Similarly, a fumble return for a touchdown earns +2 (fumble recovery) + +6 (TD) = +8 points. These are among the highest-value plays a DST can produce.

Does the points-allowed tier count special teams points against the defense?

This varies by platform. On ESPN, points allowed by the defense typically includes all points scored by the opponent — including special teams TDs (punt returns, kick returns) scored against your selected DST. Always check your specific platform's rules if you're unsure.

Can a DST score negative points in a game?

Yes. If the opponent scores 46+ points, the DST loses 5 points from the points-allowed tier alone. Combined with zero sacks or turnovers, a DST can easily finish the week with 0 or negative fantasy points. This is why streaming high-upside matchups beats rostering elite defenses in bad spots.
