How Does World Cup 2026 Fantasy Scoring Work?

The official FIFA World Cup 2026 fantasy game is available at play.fifa.com. It follows a format similar to FPL (Fantasy Premier League) — you build a squad of 15 players within a transfer budget, pick a starting XI each matchday, and score points based on real player performances.

With the tournament running from June 11 to July 19, 2026, now is the time to understand the scoring system so you're ready when registration opens.

Use our World Cup 2026 Fantasy Calculator to calculate points for any player before you finalise your team.

How the FIFA Fantasy Game Works

Squad structure: You pick 15 players — typically 2 GK, 5 DEF, 5 MID, 3 FWD — from any of the 48 competing nations.

Budget: A transfer budget is assigned (exact figure confirmed closer to tournament start — typically around $100m in-game currency). Players are priced based on their perceived quality and popularity.

Matchday lineups: You select 11 starters and 4 bench players before each matchday. Points are earned only by players in your starting XI (bench players score 0 unless a transfer is made).

Transfers: A limited number of free transfers are available per round. Additional transfers are possible but may incur a points penalty.

Captain: Each matchday you designate a captain who earns double points. Picking the right captain is often the difference between a good and a great gameweek score.

Bonus Points (POTM / Star of the Match)

FIFA awards bonus points to the top-performing players each match, similar to FPL's BPS (Bonus Points System). The top 3 players by match rating typically earn 3, 2, and 1 bonus points respectively. These are awarded after the match is processed — usually within a few hours.

Key stats that drive bonus points:

  • Goals and assists (highest weight)
  • Key passes, shots on target
  • Successful dribbles and tackles
  • Pass accuracy and defensive clearances
  • Clean sheet contributions (GK/DEF)

Captain and Vice-Captain

Each matchday you must choose a captain who scores double points. If your captain doesn't play (0 minutes), the vice-captain you selected will automatically captain instead.

Captain strategy for the World Cup:

  • Target players guaranteed to start from strong attacking nations
  • Look for captains whose teams have an easy matchup in the group stage
  • Avoid captaining players at risk of rotation (especially in the third group game if qualification is already secured)
  • In the knockout rounds, captaining a penalty taker on a team likely to see extra time can be high-variance but rewarding

Transfer Budget and Player Pricing

The transfer budget is fixed at the start. Premium players from nations like Brazil, France, England, Argentina, and Germany will command the highest prices. Value picks — differential players from smaller nations who play big tournament roles — can unlock budget elsewhere.

Budget tips:

  • Spend up on your starting FWD and MID slots — these positions score the most attacking points
  • Keep one GK spot cheap (you'll rotate based on matchday fixture)
  • Defenders from teams expected to keep clean sheets (defensively solid nations) offer excellent value at lower price points

Wildcards and Chips

FIFA typically offers special chips during the tournament — similar to FPL's Triple Captain, Bench Boost, and Free Hit. The exact chips available for 2026 are confirmed closer to launch, but historically have included:

  • Wildcard: Make unlimited free transfers in one gameweek
  • Triple Captain: Your captain earns 3× points instead of 2×
  • Bench Boost: Your bench players score points alongside your starters for one gameweek

Use Triple Captain on a marquee striker in the quarter-finals when one match is played per gameweek — this is where the highest single-player scores are possible.

Key Scoring Differences vs FPL

FeatureFIFA World Cup FantasyFPL
GK clean sheet+4 pts+6 pts
DEF clean sheet+4 pts+6 pts
DEF goal+6 pts+6 pts
MID goal+5 pts+5 pts
FWD goal+4 pts+4 pts
Assist+3 pts+3 pts
Appearance+1/+2 pts+1/+2 pts
GK save (per 3)+1 pt+1 pt

The main difference is clean sheet points — FIFA gives 4 for GK and DEF vs FPL's 6. This makes goalkeepers and defenders slightly less dominant in World Cup fantasy, shifting value toward midfielders and forwards.

Top Tips for World Cup 2026 Fantasy

Pack your squad with group-stage warriors. In the group stage, each team plays 3 matches. Players from nations likely to play all 3 (avoiding early elimination) give you maximum game time and scoring opportunities.

Watch for the clean sheet rotation. Teams that qualify early for the Round of 32 may rest key players in the final group game. If you own defenders from those nations, check their lineup news.

Differentiate in the knockouts. Once the field narrows, ownership percentages on top players skyrocket. In the knockout rounds, a differential pick who explodes can swing the overall standings.

Track yellow card accumulations. A player on a yellow card suspension risk who gets booked will miss the next match — a costly blank in your starting XI.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I play the official FIFA World Cup 2026 fantasy game?

The official game is at play.fifa.com. Registration typically opens 4–6 weeks before the tournament.

Can I change my squad after the tournament starts?

Yes — you have a limited number of free transfers per round. Once those are used, additional transfers come at a points cost.

Do I score points if my player is on the bench?

No — only players in your starting 11 score points in the base game. The Bench Boost chip is the exception.

What happens if a player is injured or suspended during the tournament?

You will need to use a transfer to replace them. Monitor news carefully — FIFA fantasy typically provides a grace period for free transfers following major injury announcements.

How is captain chosen?

You select a captain (and vice-captain) before each matchday deadline. The captain earns 2× their total points for that matchday.
