How Does Fantasy Football Scoring Work? Platform-by-Platform Breakdown

Fantasy football scoring converts real NFL statistics into fantasy points. Every platform does this slightly differently, and understanding those differences can help you draft better, make smarter waiver moves, and win more weeks.

This guide breaks down exactly how scoring works, platform by platform.

The Universal Framework

All fantasy football platforms share the same basic architecture: they assign a point value to specific player statistics, then add them up after each game. The core stats are rushing yards, receiving yards, passing yards, and touchdowns.

Where platforms diverge is in the fine print — interception penalties, PPR settings, bonus thresholds, and kicker scoring. These small differences can shift a player's value meaningfully over a full season.

ESPN Fantasy Scoring (Default)

ESPN is the most widely used fantasy platform. Here are its default scoring settings:

StatESPN Default
Passing yards (per 25)1 pt
Passing TD4 pts
Interception thrown-2 pts
Rushing yards (per 10)1 pt
Rushing TD6 pts
Receiving yards (per 10)1 pt
Reception (PPR)0 pts (standard)
Receiving TD6 pts
Fumble lost-2 pts

ESPN's default format is standard scoring with no PPR. Many ESPN leagues customise to half-PPR (0.5 per reception), which is now the most popular format. Use our ESPN fantasy scoring calculator for quick calculations.

Yahoo Fantasy Scoring (Default)

Yahoo's default scoring is nearly identical to ESPN with one key difference — the interception penalty is only -1 point instead of -2.

StatYahoo Default
Passing yards (per 25)1 pt
Passing TD4 pts
Interception thrown-1 pt
Rushing yards (per 10)1 pt
Rushing TD6 pts
Receiving yards (per 10)1 pt
Reception (PPR)0 pts (standard)
Receiving TD6 pts

Yahoo's default is also non-PPR, but Yahoo leagues skew more toward half-PPR in practice. The milder interception penalty makes QBs slightly more valuable on Yahoo compared to ESPN defaults. Use our Yahoo fantasy scoring calculator to calculate Yahoo-specific scores.

Sleeper Fantasy Scoring (Default)

Sleeper has become the platform of choice for serious and younger fantasy players due to its interface and dynasty/keeper features.

StatSleeper Default
Passing yards (per 25)1 pt
Passing TD4 pts
Interception thrown-2 pts
Rushing yards (per 10)1 pt
Rushing TD6 pts
Reception0.5 pts (half-PPR)
Receiving yards (per 10)1 pt
Receiving TD6 pts

Sleeper's default is half-PPR — the most balanced format that rewards pass-catching backs and slot receivers without inflating them to the degree full PPR does. Use our Sleeper fantasy scoring calculator to run Sleeper-specific numbers.

NFL.com Fantasy Scoring

NFL.com's official platform mirrors ESPN's scoring in most respects. It uses standard (non-PPR) scoring by default, with 4-point passing touchdowns and -2 for interceptions. Leagues on NFL.com tend to be more casual, though the platform allows full customisation.

DraftKings Daily Fantasy Scoring

DraftKings uses a different system built for daily fantasy (DFS) with a salary cap. Scoring is designed to differentiate players more sharply:

StatDraftKings
Passing yards (per 25)1 pt
Passing TD4 pts
300+ yard passing bonus+3 pts
Rushing yards (per 10)1 pt
Rushing TD6 pts
100+ yard rushing bonus+3 pts
Reception1 pt (full PPR)
Receiving yards (per 10)1 pt
100+ yard receiving bonus+3 pts
Receiving TD6 pts

The milestone bonuses on DraftKings are significant — a player who crosses the 100-yard threshold earns an extra 3 points on top of their yardage total. Use our DraftKings fantasy calculator to compute DFS-specific scores.

FanDuel Daily Fantasy Scoring

FanDuel uses a slightly modified DFS scoring system. The biggest difference from DraftKings: no milestone bonuses and a different yards-per-point threshold for passing.

StatFanDuel
Passing yards (per 25)1 pt
Passing TD4 pts
Interception-1 pt
Rushing yards (per 10)1 pt
Rushing TD6 pts
Reception0.5 pts
Receiving yards (per 10)1 pt
Receiving TD6 pts

FanDuel's lack of milestone bonuses means consistent performers are valued higher relative to boom-or-bust players. Use our FanDuel fantasy calculator to run FanDuel-specific numbers.

PPR vs Standard: The Format That Changes Everything

The single biggest factor in how scoring works is whether your league uses PPR (Point Per Reception) or standard scoring.

In standard scoring, touchdowns and yards are the only path to points. Running backs who carry the ball a lot dominate; players who catch passes but don't reach the end zone score much less.

In PPR scoring, every catch earns 1 bonus point. Slot receivers who catch 8 passes for 60 yards suddenly outscore a rushing back who gains 80 yards on 15 carries.

Half-PPR (0.5 per reception) is the middle ground — the most popular format in competitive leagues today.

Superflex: The QB-Changing Format

In Superflex leagues, you can start a second quarterback in your flex spot. This fundamentally changes how QBs are scored and valued — the top 12 QBs all become premium assets rather than streaming picks.

If your league uses Superflex, the scoring settings are the same, but the value distribution changes dramatically. See our Superflex calculator for more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which platform has the best default scoring settings?

There's no objectively better platform — it depends on your league's preferences. Sleeper's half-PPR default is widely considered the most balanced. ESPN and Yahoo are more customisable and better for large groups.

Can I change my league's scoring mid-season?

Most platforms allow commissioners to change scoring settings, but changes typically apply to future games only, not retroactively. Always lock in your scoring settings before Week 1.

Why do my player's points look different on two platforms?

Different default settings — especially around PPR, interception penalties, and milestone bonuses — create different totals for the same stats. Make sure you're using the right calculator for your specific platform and league settings.
